Pennies In The Pavement

About 10 years ago, I came home from my corporate job, stressing over something horrible that was happening. It’s funny to think about because I couldn't even tell you what it was about. I was having an all-out meltdown—why did I worry so much back then? It was summer, hot and humid, with rain in the forecast for later. I thought a run would help—surely, the day couldn’t get any worse. Well, you guessed it... it did.

I went out for the run, knowing the rain was coming later. I jogged about 30 minutes from my apartment. It was hot and humid, and I was jogging along, stuck in my head with negative thoughts, mumbling to myself, and then... I felt a raindrop. Instantly, I thought... YOU MUST BE KIDDING ME! I knew I should turn around, but I thought I still had time. Then, I heard thunder. Awesome. And then... TORRENTIAL RAIN. Within minutes, I was soaked as if I had gone swimming. So I'm still hot, still miserable, and now I couldn’t breathe. I was crying... so I was doing really well. I was like, “Universe, why do you hate me?”

Suddenly, I saw a penny on the road, glimmering in the rain and I thought... my grandma Grace sent me a penny! My grandma always sent me pennies as signs! Everything will be okay... she sees me. And then I noticed there were a few more... awesome! So, I went to pick them up... and THEY WERE MELTED INTO THE PAVEMENT. LMAO! I was mad for a second, like, “You have to be kidding me,” and then I started hysterically laughing—middle of the street, in the rain, by myself. My grandma had a great sense of humor, and she thought everything was funny. I could hear her laughing, and I started laughing too.

Message received: laughter always pops me back into the present moment. I get it. Lighten up. It will be okay. Get back into the present moment, girl. It was then I realized I had created this all-out energy ball of madness in my head from the day’s events.

So, I did. I came back to the present moment.

I walked home in the rain, and I enjoyed it. It was cleansing, fun, and who cared at that point. That sign gave me energy, changed my entire mood, and threw me back into the present moment where I should have been anyway. I couldn’t change whatever happened in the day, but I could start again tomorrow. But in that moment, that’s all I had, so I might as well enjoy the rain and know better days were ahead.

Staying in the present moment is crucial. It's all we truly have, and it's where we can create our next steps and make things better for the journey ahead. By being present, we can find clarity, peace, and the strength to face whatever comes our way. When you remain in the present moment, whether alone or with others, you gain deeper knowledge and have more fulfilling experiences. You'll reach energetic layers that you might miss if you're hurried, distracted, or mentally making to-do lists. Being fully present gifts you with special energy that exists only in that moment.

So, no matter how tough your day might be, remember to pause, breathe, and come back to the present moment. That's where the magic happens.✨
