Path Connections

Life is weird, right? You never really know who—or what—is going to show up on your path. Just look at this guy above. He and some of his friends showed up on my path in a forest and I was pretty happy he did!
Sometimes you think you know where you're going. You have a plan. You have a job you don't really want to stay at. You almost don't go to the party. You hesitate before saying yes. And then something happens. You meet someone.
You get introduced to someone through someone else. You go somewhere you almost didn't go. And suddenly, your path changes.
Some of my favorite people in my life came from places I never expected. Jobs I didn't think I would stay at. Situations I almost walked away from. Random connections that seemed to come completely out of nowhere.
But did they? I don't know. Maybe that's the magic of it. The cosmic part. The people who appear at exactly the right time. The ones who somehow connect you to something—or someone—you never would have found on your own. Those are my favorite connections. The ones that feel aligned. Unexpected. Exciting. Almost a little bit magical.
Recently, I went on an incredible forest walk upstate, and it reminded me of this in the most unexpected way. It was at the Wild Center in Tupper lake, New York. The forest was beautiful and peaceful, but there was also something else there. Something I could feel. The walk featured an incredible outdoor exhibit called Trolls: Save the Humans—six giant trolls made from wood, each with their own story, traveling through the forest with a mission to help humans rediscover their connection to nature. They were sculptures. But they felt like so much more than sculptures.
There was something about them—the scale, the wood, the forest, the stories—that completely lit me up. I could feel the energy of the place. It felt magical. Inspiring. A little otherworldly. And as I walked through the forest, I started thinking about the people who have walked through my life.
Some people are meant to be on your path for a very specific amount of time. They arrive. They teach you something. They open a door. They help you see something differently. And then, sometimes, they leave. Maybe the lesson is over.
Maybe the connection has done exactly what it was supposed to do. Some people stay forever. Those are my favorite kind. The people who have a little extra magic in them. The ones you can pick up with at any turn in the path, even if you haven't talked in months or years. Because not everyone is meant to walk beside you every single day. Some people are meant to walk with you for a stretch. Some people veer you off the path entirely—and sometimes, let's be honest, you have to kick a few people off the path! Yep. Some people are weighing you down. Some people are not meant to come with you where you're going. And that's okay too.
The path keeps changing. Sometimes it's straight. Sometimes it's winding. Sometimes you have no idea where you're going and just have to trust that the next step will reveal itself. And sometimes, the best adventures—and the best people—are found on the paths you never planned to take.
That's what I kept thinking about as I walked through the forest. The unexpected people. The unexpected places. The connections that come out of nowhere and somehow lead you exactly where you needed to go. So think about your own path. Who has appeared at just the right time? Who changed your direction? Who connected you to something wonderful? Who walked with you for a while and then disappeared?
And who are the people you know will always be there—no matter how many twists, turns, detours, and adventures your path takes? I am so grateful for the people who have been placed on my path. The ones who stayed. The ones who taught me. The ones who opened doors. The ones who made me laugh. The ones who helped me find my way. And even the ones who made me take the long way around.
Because maybe that's the point. Maybe we're not supposed to know exactly where the path is leading. Maybe we're just supposed to keep walking. Stay open. Pay attention. Trust the unexpected. And notice who—and what—shows up along the way. Because you never know. The next person you meet could change everything. And sometimes, the most magical things are waiting for you just around the bend.
